Does a juice cleanse to lose weight really work? The question is fair, because after three days the scale often shows one or two kilos less. But a large part of that is not fat.

In this article, you will learn what is behind the rapid change in the number and what research tells us about water, muscle, and fat. You will read why weight often returns, who a juice cleanse to lose weight is not suitable for, and how the cleanse can still be a good starting point.

Juice cleanse to lose weight? The honest answer

A juice cleanse to lose weight makes you lighter, but differently from what many people think. In the first few days, it is mainly water that is lost; only afterward does the proportion of fat increase. According to the nutritional information, the BESSERE SAFTKUR PLUS provides 731 to 885 kilocalories per day. That is significantly less than a normal day, and this deficit is exactly what makes the difference on the scale.

Anyone planning a juice cleanse to lose weight should therefore not evaluate the number on the third morning, but what remains two weeks later. A juice cleanse to lose weight is a short phase, not a plan for months.

Many figures on juice cleanses to lose weight come from studies on water fasting. Where a study does not apply precisely to juices, we will tell you.

Phase What happens in the body What the scale shows
days 1 to 2 glycogen stores are depleted, bound water is lost rapid decrease
from day 3 the body uses more fat as energy slower decrease
first days afterward stores are replenished, water returns slight increase

What the scale shows in the first few days

Your body stores carbohydrates as glycogen in the liver and muscles. Each gram of it binds at least three grams of water (Fernandez-Elias and colleagues, 2015). When you eat less, the body first draws on these stores. The water goes along with the glycogen, and the scale shows this immediately.

There is also less food in the intestines. During a juice cleanse to lose weight, the rapid success of the first two days is therefore mainly water and intestinal contents, with hardly any fat. Only after two to three days does the body switch more strongly to fat as an energy source (Pietzner and colleagues, 2024).

The number

1 to 3. This is how much water at least one gram of glycogen binds. That is why the number on the scale drops quickly at first and rises slightly again after the first normal meals.

For your juice cleanse to lose weight, this means that the number on the second morning is not progress in terms of fat. If it rises slightly again after the cleanse, the stores are simply being replenished. This increase is part of every juice cleanse to lose weight. How much energy each juice contains is explained in our article on calories and sugar in a juice cleanse.

Water, muscle, fat: what really goes away

A review published in 2024 analyzed studies on longer fasts lasting 5 to 20 days. Participants lost two to ten percent of their body weight. Around two-thirds of that was lean mass, meaning water, glycogen, and muscle protein; only one-third was fat (Ezpeleta and colleagues, 2024). The researchers consider the high loss of lean mass a critical point.

A second study from 2024 makes this tangible. Twelve volunteers fasted for seven days on water alone and lost an average of 5.7 kilos. Of that, 3.6 kilos were lean mass and 1.6 kilos were fat. After three days of normal eating, the lean mass had almost completely returned, while the fat loss remained (Pietzner and colleagues, 2024). This left them 3.1 kilos below their starting weight.

What does this mean for a juice cleanse for weight loss? Juices provide more energy than water fasting, so the figures are not directly comparable. The pattern, however, is. The actual fat loss from a juice cleanse for weight loss is smaller than what the scales show, and over three days it is more likely to be measured in grams than kilos.

To lose as little muscle as possible during a juice cleanse for weight loss, gentle exercise helps. Walking is good; intensive sports are not (Verbraucherzentrale, 2026).

Why weight often returns after a cleanse

The most common frustration after a juice cleanse for weight loss is the yo-yo effect. Some of it is harmless, because water and glycogen return with the first slice of bread. The other part is tied to everyday life. Those who eat as they did before after a juice cleanse for weight loss will soon return to their old weight.

A small study with 20 adults shows both sides. After three days of vegetable and fruit juices, participants weighed an average of 1.7 kilos less. Two weeks later, with their usual diet, 0.9 kilos of that remained (Henning and colleagues, 2017). A juice cleanse for weight loss therefore does make a difference, but less than the first look at the scales suggests.

Even favorable measurements such as blood pressure or blood sugar do not stay that way on their own. Three to four months after fasting, they were no longer measurable, even when weight remained low (Ezpeleta and colleagues, 2024). The DGE considers fasting only conditionally suitable for lasting weight loss, but sees it as a possible starting point for changing one's diet (DGE, 2018). A juice cleanse for weight loss therefore does not replace a lasting change in diet.

What matters after a juice cleanse for weight loss is the transition. Those who slowly start eating again, with vegetables, legumes, and enough protein, retain more of what the cleanse set in motion. Our article how to rebuild properly after a juice cleanse shows how to do this step by step.

Our recommendation:

When a juice cleanse for weight loss is not suitable

A juice cleanse for weight loss is not a good idea for everyone. With being underweight, there is no reserve for the body to draw on during the days of the cleanse. In the case of an eating disorder, including a past one, deliberate restriction can revive old patterns. In both cases, a juice cleanse for weight loss is the wrong approach, even for just three days.

Caution is also advised during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with diabetes treated with medication, and with other chronic conditions. In these cases, consult a doctor before starting a juice cleanse for weight loss. The German Nutrition Society (DGE) emphasizes that therapeutic fasting should be accompanied by experienced doctors, especially when medications need to be adjusted (DGE, 2018).

And then there is the goal itself. Anyone who wants to lose a lot quickly for a special occasion is likely to be disappointed by a juice cleanse for weight loss. The rapid drop is too much water weight. You can find a detailed checklist with warning signs in our article on who a juice cleanse is suitable for.

This is how the cleanse becomes a starting point

If you see a juice cleanse for weight loss not as a solution but as a starting point, it can accomplish a lot. In an observational study of 1,422 people fasting according to the Buchinger method, participants felt better physically and emotionally on average, and more than 93 percent did not feel hungry (Wilhelmi de Toledo and colleagues, 2019). This does not prove lasting weight loss, but it shows that a few mindful days are manageable.

The value of a juice cleanse for weight loss lies in observing yourself. You notice when you would otherwise eat out of habit: in the afternoon, while watching TV, or casually at your desk.

  • Write down three moments when you would otherwise snack.
  • Plan a new, simple solution for each of these moments.
  • After the cleanse, have a serving of vegetables with every meal.
  • Keep moving with walks, even after the cleanse is over.

Measure differently

Weigh yourself before the cleanse and then not again until two weeks later. In between, focus instead on sleep, energy, and hunger. This way, you assess your juice cleanse for weight loss by what remains.

How long your first juice cleanse for weight loss should be depends on your experience. Our comparison of a 3-, 5-, or 7-day juice cleanse will help you choose. You can find all the options in the juice cleanses overview.

Conclusion

A juice cleanse for weight loss quickly makes the number on the scale go down, but most of that is water and glycogen at first. Fat loss is slower, and some of the weight returns. Studies from 2017 to 2024 show this fairly consistently.

Even so, a juice cleanse for weight loss can be a good starting point. It interrupts old patterns. What you eat and how much you exercise after the juice cleanse for weight loss determines the result.
